Course Description

This 9 hour skirt making course is designed for those who already have basic sewing skills and would like to progress to making their own clothes. Ideally you would have already attended our "Sew simple" or "LayOnMe" cushion class or have some previous experience using a sewing machine.

This sewing course is usually made up of 3 x 3 hour sessions run over 3 consecutive weeks, but we also schedule crash courses. You can check our schedule by clicking the book button.

This is a fantastic sewing course where you will be able to bring your skills together and make a garment from start to finish and walk away with a new A-line skirt. Areas we cover include:

- Set up a sewing machine
- Take measurements
- Learn to read a pattern
- Learn to alter a commercial pattern
- Laying/cutting out of pattern and fabrics, what do the symbols mean?
- Gathering
- Top stitching
- Simple decorative stitching with machine

Session 1 - Using a Skirt Pattern

In the first session you'll will learn how to use a commercial pattern, lay, mark and pin pattern to fabric and cut out. You will learn what all the symbols mean. Handle the tools, learn the methods and practice the terminology of flat pattern cutting. You will be shown how to take your own measurements and cut your own pattern for making a skirt. Please bring along the following materials:

Skirt fabric - size 8-14
- Either 1.8m (180cm) of 115cm wide woven cotton (non stretchy)
- Or 1.4m (140cm) of 140cm wide woven cotton (non stretchy)
- Regular zip (18-20 cm long)
- Matching thread and button.
- A button.

Skirt fabric - size 16-18
- Either 2m (200cm) of 115cm wide woven cotton (non stretchy)
- Or 1.8m (180cm) of 140cm wide woven cotton (non stretchy)
- Regular zip (18-20 cm long)
- Matching thread and button.
- A button.

Session 2 - Construct Your Skirt

During the second session of the course you will learn a series of techniques including inserting lapped zips, hemming, machine buttonholes & using different sewing machine feet. You will start putting your skirt together, which will be ready for fitting by the end of the class.

Session 3 - Finish Your Skirt

During the last day you will be able to put all your learnt skills into place, learn how to construct a waistband, attach interfacing and complete your project walking away with a new, perfectly fitted A-line skirt made by you.

Just to sew things up...

All machines, and equipment are provided, although if you would like to bring your own sewing machine to learn on, you are welcome to. You can buy fabric from us, we have a selection for £14 (available when booking the class). Refreshments and biscuits are included and a glass of wine for all evening classes to help create a seamless atmosphere.
